Shubman Gill has climbed to the No. 2 spot in the ICC ODI rankings, overtaking teammate Virat Kohli.

What happened?

The latest ICC ODI batting rankings saw a notable reshuffle at the top.
Shubman Gill's rise in the rankings comes on the back of a stellar performance in India's recently concluded three-match ODI series against Afghanistan.
He scored 84 in the opening ODI before producing a magnificent 154 in the second match.

Why it matters for Shubman Gill

Gill's performances earned him the Player of the Series award and helped him gain three places in the rankings.
Virat Kohli, on the other hand, dropped one position despite continuing to be among the most accomplished ODI batters in world cricket.
Kohli's absence from the Afghanistan series was due to a right hamstring injury he suffered during the IPL 2026 final between RCB and GT.

What comes next?

Rohit Sharma, who currently occupies fourth place, will also be aiming to climb higher in the rankings.
Rohit scored 143 runs in the Afghanistan series at a strike rate of over 115, including fluent knocks of 48 and 79 in the final two matches.
Daryl Mitchell continues to reign at the top spot of the ODI ranking with 815 points.
Afghanistan's Ibrahim Zadran's position has slumped down after a disappointing performance against India.
Shubman Gill will look to maintain his position in the upcoming three-match ODI series against England in July.
